The Golden Calf and the Glory of God

ABOUT THIS MESSAGe

In Exodus 32–34, the Israelites quickly turn from God by crafting a golden calf while Moses is on Mount Sinai. God is ready to destroy them, but Moses intercedes, reminding Him of His promises. When Moses returns and sees the idolatry, he breaks the tablets, destroys the calf, and calls the Levites to purify the camp. In sorrow and repentance, the people mourn as God threatens to send them on without His presence. Moses pleads again, saying, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” God responds in mercy, reaffirming His relationship with Moses and revealing His glory and name—Yahweh, the God who is merciful, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, yet also just. This passage reminds us that God desires a people who reflect His character and that His presence is what sets His people apart.
